AERATION & DECOMPACTION

ESSENTIAL PRACTICES FOR GRASS HEALTH

GRASS HEALTH STARTS UNDER THE GROUND

Soil decompaction and aeration are two essential services in the maintenance of sports turf, but each has different objectives and methods. Decompaction aims to alleviate soil compaction, a common problem on fields that are frequently used, such as for games and training. This process is carried out with equipment such as the Verti-Drain, which drills into the soil and breaks up compacted layers, allowing better penetration of air, water and nutrients. Decompaction is especially important to improve soil drainage, reduce water accumulation and provide a firmer and safer base for root growth.

Aeration focuses on increasing air circulation in the soil, promoting oxygenation of the roots. Although the process also involves drilling the soil, aeration removes pieces of soil, creating small holes or channels, allowing air to reach the roots directly. Aeration is crucial to improving the health of the field, as it facilitates the absorption of nutrients and promotes recovery after heavy use, especially in areas with high compaction.

WHEN
TO DO?

It should be done at least once a year, preferably during spring or early summer, when grass growth is at its peak. During these periods, the grass is most active, which helps it recover quickly after the procedure. It is best to avoid decompacting during winter or periods of water stress, as the field may take longer to recover. This procedure can be done more than once a year, depending on the use and level of soil compaction.

HOW TO DO IT?

EQUIPMENT

Use a soil decompactor, such as the Verti-Drain, set to the required depth according to the soil type and level of compaction.

EXECUTION

Perform cross passes to ensure even coverage of the entire field area.

POST-SERVICE

Water the field after dethatching to help the roots recover.

ESSENTIAL CARE

Adjust the depth and spacing of the holes according to the type of grass and specific soil conditions.

Avoid carrying out the procedure when the soil is very dry or waterlogged, as this impacts the machine's performance.

EXPECTED RESULTS

Better penetration of water, air and nutrients into the soil.

Deeper and more vigorous root development.

Reduced risk of water accumulation on the surface.

How long to wait for sports use after service?

For decompaction, the field can generally be used immediately, depending on the intensity and the recovery of the grass. For aeration, at least 15 days of recovery is suggested.
