CASHMAN FIELD STADIUM
LAS VEGAS LIGHTS

Renovation and 24-hour Field Conversion from Soccer to Baseball

 CLIENT:
Las Vegas Lights

 YEAR:
2018

 SOLUTION:
World Sports was hired to convert the professional Baseball field at Cashman Field Stadium to a ready-to-play professional Soccer field, and vice-versa, in 24 hours. This conversion was necessary while the Stadium transitioned from the Las Vegas 51’s Minor League Baseball Team to USL’s Las Vegas Lights Soccer Team. The work had to be carried out in less than 24 hours as there were baseball and soccer games in consecutive games. Today, the Stadium belongs solely to Las Vegas Lights.

AZTECA STADIUM

Rennovation

 CLIENT:
Televisia – Estadio Azteca

 YEAR:
2019 to Present

 SOLUTION:
World Sports was first tasked in the capacity of Technical Advisor.  After the cancellation of the Mexico City Rams v. Chiefs game in 2018, the NFL and Azteca Stadium sought out a consultant with experience in the Latin American market.  A failure analysis was performed that resulted in a decision to renovate the Azteca Stadium fields by removing the “hybrid grass” system that was installed and a return to a 100% natural grass turf.

Thereafter, World Sports was retained to serve as the Project Managers, ensuring the renovation of the field, which included new drainage, irrigation, soils and turf were installed properly and to specifications.   Les than seven (7) months after the project was complete, the NFL hosted the international Mexico City game, Los Angeles Chargers v. Kansas City Chiefs.

Some of the challenges facing the NFL, Azteca Stadium and World Sports are discussed in the following article, which appeared in the August 2019 issues of Sports Turf, the official magazine of the Sports Turf Managers Association.

 YEAR:
2013-2014: Design, Construction and Maintenance for the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

2020: World Sports was hired back to take over the Maintenance of the field at Arena Pantanal.

 SOLUTION:
World Sports was hired to design and build the field at the Arena Pantanal Stadium to have it ready to host four of the World Cup games in 2014 as well as maintain the field during the event. We implemented a gravity drainage system and a mix of elastic fibers embedded with the natural grass. The seeds planted were imported from Oregon, USA with the FIBRESOFT elastic fiber system installed in partnership with CRL from Ireland.

In 2020, World Sports was brought back to Arena Pantanal to handle the day-to-day maintenance of the field.

NEO QUIMICA ARENA
S.C. CORINTHIANS

Design, Construction and Maintenance

 CLIENT:
S.C. Corinthians Paulista

 YEAR:
2013 – Present

 SOLUTION:
World Sports was in charge of the construction and now maintenance of the grass portion of Arena Corinthians, now known as Neo Química Arena, home of the professional team S.C. Corinthians Paulista and host of the opening of the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

Per the owner’s request, World Sports was to create an European-style pitch with perfect playability in any kind of weather, using Perennial Ryegrass, a cool season grass common in European stadiums. To accomplish this task, we had to create a field capable of maintaining its high standard of quality and integrity during Brazil’s high temperatures. Thus, World Sports developed the first sports field cooling system to be used in a World Cup, it consisted of the following:

• Sub-surface pipes with cold water running constantly beneath the field and cold air injections to keep the field’s temperature at a maximum of 22°C (71.6°F).
• Grassmaster’s hybrid artificial turf fibers for reinforcement of the turf.
• Vacuum drainage system allowing fast and reliable drainage.

This system, which still runs smoothly till this day, was completed in time for the stadium to host the opening of the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil as well as six other World Cup games. Even after so many games in quick succession, World Sports was able to keep the pitch in “almost perfect conditions”, according to André Amaral, the World Sports Manager responsible for the maintenance of the Neo Química Arena Field.
