World Sports was in charge of the construction and now maintenance of the grass portion of Arena Corinthians, now known as Neo Química Arena, home of the professional team S.C. Corinthians Paulista and host of the opening of the 2014 FIFA World Cup.
Per the owner’s request, World Sports was to create an European-style pitch with perfect playability in any kind of weather, using Perennial Ryegrass, a cool season grass common in European stadiums. To accomplish this task, we had to create a field capable of maintaining its high standard of quality and integrity during Brazil’s high temperatures. Thus, World Sports developed the first sports field cooling system to be used in a World Cup, it consisted of the following:
• Sub-surface pipes with cold water running constantly beneath the field and cold air injections to keep the field’s temperature at a maximum of 22°C (71.6°F).
• Grassmaster’s hybrid artificial turf fibers for reinforcement of the turf.
• Vacuum drainage system allowing fast and reliable drainage.
This system, which still runs smoothly till this day, was completed in time for the stadium to host the opening of the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil as well as six other World Cup games. Even after so many games in quick succession, World Sports was able to keep the pitch in “almost perfect conditions”, according to André Amaral, the World Sports Manager responsible for the maintenance of the Neo Química Arena Field.
